Rock veteran Todd Rundgren has ignited a firestorm among Swifties after declaring in a Vulture interview that Taylor Swift has 'ruined music' and calling her the 'apotheosis of mediocrity.'

The remarks came during a wide-ranging conversation with Vulture writer Devon Ivie. After discussing how his production work on Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out of Hell' was meant to spoof Bruce Springsteen, Rundgren was asked which artist he would target today if he helmed an album. 'Taylor Swift, of course. There's an argument to be made that she ruined music,' he responded. 'It's just that, to me, Taylor Swift is the apotheosis of mediocrity.'

Rundgren offered his own theory of how the music industry arrived at its current state. He hypothesized that we are living in the 'era of the female artists' because boys started spending their money on video games instead of music in the 1990s. 'That left the music market with, Well, where do we go here? And they said, Well, there's all these young girls and they've got their allowances, too. Why don't we start making music for young girls instead of Pearl Jam or something like that?'

The singer, songwriter, and producer then drew a sharp contrast with Lady Gaga, whom he praised as a 'real musician' and a 'classically trained piano player' — before turning his ire back on Swift. 'Taylor Swift doesn't do anything particularly great except grow hair,' he huffed. 'She's not a great singer. She's not a great songwriter. She's not a great dancer. She's a role model for what was a very young generation of women, and now for those women's daughters as well, because it's mothers and daughters going to Taylor Swift shows.'

The comments drew swift backlash from Swift's legion of fans, who pointed to her formidable songwriting catalog as a rebuttal. While critics have been mixed on her most recent work — 2025's 'The Life of a Showgirl' and its newly released deluxe edition featuring four new songs — her earlier albums tell a different story. The pop crossover '1989' and the indie folk projects 'folklore' and 'evermore' have been widely praised for their songwriting, and Swift was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Rundgren, known for hits like 'Hello It's Me' and his production of landmark albums, has never been one to shy away from provocation. This time, his broadside at the world's biggest pop star has ensured his name trends alongside hers — exactly the kind of attention the self-described contrarian has courted for decades.
