Former Mediacorp actor Ayden Sng has become a breakout star in China after playing Lu Feng in the boys' love web drama Double Helix, which premiered in May, in a career reinvention that has taken him from local television to the centre of one of the internet's most talked-about on-screen pairings. Sng stars as a wealthy, rebellious heir who falls for Cheng Yichen, his studious and quietly principled classmate, portrayed by Chinese actor Lv Sitong.
The series, based on Chinese BL author Lan Lin's novel A Round Trip to Love, released its first two episodes on May 8, 2026, on platforms including GagaOOLala, Viki, YouTube and Viu, and ran for 12 episodes, concluding on June 13. It marked Sng's debut in a BL drama and his first leading role in the Chinese market, after years as a familiar face on Mediacorp dramas such as The Unbreakable Bond and All That Glitters. The chemistry between Sng and his co-star electrified the show's fandom, and the attention reached fever pitch in July, when the two actors were mobbed by fans at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The July 29 incident turned chaotic: 22 fans followed the pair into an airline lounge without authorisation and then trailed them to the departure gate for Thai Airways flight TG674 to Beijing, refusing to cooperate with boarding-pass checks and attempting to rush onto the aircraft. The airport later apologised on August 5 for the inappropriate conduct of its security officers, after video of an officer making a racially offensive gesture toward the fans circulated on social media, and the 22 fans were denied boarding for failing to comply with security procedures. It was not the first time the pair had been mobbed.
Sng's move to China was a deliberate leap. He left Mediacorp in May after seven years, signed with Chinese agency Mejoy Entertainment in April 2026, and is now based in Beijing. Before showbiz, he built an academic record to make any parent proud: Raffles Institution, then Duke University in the United States, where he graduated in International Comparative Studies while rowing, performing Chinese dance and doing theatre. Now 32, he has described the relocation as a new chapter. For Singapore's entertainment industry, his ascent is both a point of pride and a familiar story: a local star finding the scale that the domestic market cannot offer, this time in the world's most competitive entertainment arena.
The source material itself has a long history with audiences. Double Helix is adapted from A Round Trip to Love, the beloved novel series by Chinese BL fiction author Lan Lin, which had previously been adapted into a film in 2016. That built-in fanbase helped propel the drama to the top of the season's most talked-about BL titles, with the on-screen chemistry between Sng and his co-star cited as a major reason for its momentum. For a Singaporean actor to headline a Chinese BL production, a genre with a vast and devoted following across Asia, marked a breakthrough that few local performers have managed.
