The UK inquest into Liam Payne's death remains stalled nearly two years after the former One Direction star fell from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024, with a British coroner saying key evidence from Argentina has still not been disclosed.
At a pre-inquest review on May 7, 2026, Senior Coroner for Buckinghamshire Crispin Butler told the court: "Since the last pre-inquest review, we have had no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. My understanding is the investigations are continuing, and I await further developments." A further pre-inquest review is scheduled for December 1, 2026, and the full inquest has been adjourned until at least then.
The reason is structural: when a British citizen dies abroad, a coroner's court cannot compel foreign witnesses to testify or subpoena foreign documents. All evidence from Argentina must travel through the FCDO, be formally translated, and arrive at the pace of the Argentine proceedings — which are themselves unresolved.
In Argentina, the investigation has produced a 180-page report presented to Judge Laura Bruniard. Prosecutors charged three people with "abandonment of a person followed by death" and the supply and facilitation of narcotics: hotel worker Ezequiel Pereyra, 22, and waiter Braian Paiz, 26, who face drug supply charges and deny them, and businessman Rogelio "Roger" Nores, who was initially indicted on a manslaughter charge. Nores was fully cleared in 2026, with three judges agreeing he bore no responsibility, and prosecutors are not appealing.
Toxicology results confirmed that at the time of his death, Payne had drugs, alcohol and a strong sedative in his system. Medical experts confirmed his fatal injuries were consistent with a fall, not with any direct trauma related to drug use. Prosecutors said there was nothing to indicate any third party was involved in the death and had also ruled out self-harm, according to a forensic psychiatric report.
Sworn eyewitness statements from women who were with Payne that day have added to evidence of illicit substances found at the scene. Pereyra and Paiz spent months in custody before being released on bail; their trial has been delayed by jurisdictional disputes over whether the case falls under federal or local courts, and both are reportedly discussing a plea agreement.
Payne, 31, left behind a son, Bear, whom he shared with singer Cheryl Cole. On the first anniversary of his death, his sisters paid emotional tributes on Instagram. Until a full inquest convenes, the family will not have a legally binding UK determination of the circumstances of his death.
